Let's listen, accept, and embrace ๐Ÿ’™

Today, April 2nd, we mark World Autism Awareness Day. Itโ€™s a great time not only to raise awareness but also to learn how to be more supportive and inclusive toward people on the autism spectrum.

Autism is a diverse spectrum, so itโ€™s important to remember thereโ€™s no single approach that works for everyone. However, here are some principles that can help us communicate and support better:

What to do:

  • Be patient: Take your time, let the person process information and respond.

  • Be clear and concise: Use simple language and avoid slang or ambiguous expressions.

  • Be direct and honest: People on the spectrum often value straightforward communication.

  • Focus on the person: Remember that youโ€™re dealing with a person with personality, interests, and unique abilities, not just "a person with autism."

  • Ask what they need: If youโ€™re not sure how to support, simply ask.

  • Respect personal space: Some people on the spectrum are sensitive to touch or physical proximity.

  • Be accepting: Embrace diversity and the different ways people communicate and behave.

  • Support their interests: Hobbies and interests can be very important.

  • Be aware of sensory sensitivities: Bright lights, noises, or certain textures might be very unpleasant.

What not to do:

  • Donโ€™t make assumptions: Donโ€™t assume you know how the person thinks or feels.

  • Donโ€™t use condescending or childish language: Treat the person with respect.

  • Donโ€™t expect the same reactions as from others: Responses can be different and varied.

  • Donโ€™t focus only on limitations: Focus also on their strengths and skills.

  • Donโ€™t force social interaction: Respect the personโ€™s need to be alone.

  • Donโ€™t touch the person without permission: Especially if you donโ€™t know them.

  • Donโ€™t rush: Give the person time to process information and respond.

  • Donโ€™t dismiss their experiences: Even if they seem different to you.

On this dayโ€”and every dayโ€”letโ€™s remember that inclusion and acceptance of people on the autism spectrum enrich society as a whole. Letโ€™s strive to be more understanding, patient, and accepting.
