"Mom, today I learned to understand that there’s always a choice and other options..."
My Guy, 8 years old, explains to me...
When did we, as adults, forget this? Forget to check, to look around, behind, and ahead. To examine, to ask, and to explore in order to make an informed decision? There’s always a choice, and at the moment of decision-making, we accept the choice and with it the responsibility to bear the consequences.
So, after a conversation about choices with the kids in the after-school program and a clear declaration that they think I should be elected as Prime Minister—a declaration they chose to change the moment they realized that the result of me being elected by a majority vote would mean I’d have to leave the program to run the country.
So, choice and responsibility, we said? Go vote, set an example for the next generation, and when they ask who you’re voting for, add a bit of information to their choice and explain why it’s important for you to make your voice heard. So they’ll learn not to be part of the herd. So they’ll learn to check, to ask, to explore, and to make an informed decision. So they’ll grow up with a backbone and a clear opinion they can stand behind assertively when the time comes. So it aligns with the education and values you talk about. And may we all have a happy Election Day.
