Mom and Dad, don’t wake me up at night to pee! Don’t disturb my sleep!!!

So, I’m potty trained during the day. I already go to the bathroom by myself and almost never have accidents. At night, I sleep and still wake up with a wet diaper...

Mom and Dad, do you think waking me up will help??? How would you feel if I woke you up???

So here’s the deal. Listen carefully!

When I’m ready to be potty trained at night, it will happen naturally because there’s a hormone called ADH that is secreted at night, balancing the body’s fluid levels and preventing urine production during sleep. And bladder control during sleep is a developmental physiological process that neither you nor I can control. Sometimes it takes longer for it to happen, sometimes even until the age of 4. So until it happens, remember:

* Don’t stop me from drinking before bed. (Do you want me to wake you up at night because I’m thirsty??)

* Don’t wake me up at night—it disrupts my sleep cycle. (And then I’ll be tired and cranky.)

* Don’t be disappointed that it’s not happening as quickly as it did for the neighbor’s kid. It makes me feel like I’m not good enough and that it’s my fault... It doesn’t feel good to feel that way.

* When I wake up with a dry diaper for at least two weeks in a row, that will be a good time to start night training. Remove the diaper, put a waterproof sheet on the mattress, and be patient and calm even if there are accidents.

Mom and Dad, I promise. In the end, I’ll be potty trained. Like everyone else.

And I’ll always be your child who loves you.
