And here we meet in the last week of summer vacation.
On Sunday, we return to the school bench, and we meet in this live session to try to bring some order—Ilana Kahana from her perspective as a parenting coach, and I from the angle of time management.
And we’re adding a checklist:
10 Tips for Returning to Routine – A Parent’s Checklist
Print the list and go through it together, step by step...
1. Family discussion about returning to routine, including the routines that were disrupted and what we are returning to, with an emphasis on:
- Returning to proper sleep schedules
- Eating habits
- Screen time
2. Preparing the school bag –
- Completing books and notebooks, covering them, adding labels
- Organizing writing tools and preparing the pencil case
- Packing the bag with the supplies needed for the first day
3. Organizing the wardrobe with an emphasis on the school shirt shelf
4. Preparing for extracurricular activities –
- For those not yet registered – inquire and open a discussion with the child, not on "autopilot"
- Ensure you’re clear on the details of the new activities
- Equipment for the activities
5. Organizing the desk –
- Clearing the desk of all irrelevant items that accumulated during the vacation
- Hanging the schedule and adding notes about what supplies are needed for each subject
6. Recommendations for parents for the first week –
- Clear your schedule during the first week to go over things with the kids and see what’s happening; don’t overload with work this week
- Ongoing discussions throughout the week
- Parents’ concerns – talk to the kindergarten teacher/school teacher so that the child doesn’t have to express my concerns
- Treat yourself as parents, take a "refueling break" for yourself—you’ve earned it...
7. Make sure to have family dinners together during the first week – a platform for discussion and keeping a finger on the pulse
8. Preparing for the morning routine on the first day and in general –
- Do most of the preparations the night before, except for getting dressed, brushing teeth, and making a sandwich—everything else can be done the evening before
- Sandwich list + check with the school if there are food restrictions (children with allergies in the class)
9. Finalize a "weekly work schedule" for everything related to driving the kids and transitions between parts of the day
10. Key points for an emotional conversation with the kids – dealing with their concerns:
- Mediate the conversation/introductory meeting that took place at school/kindergarten for the child
- Acknowledge the child’s concerns, don’t dismiss them
- Share my feelings as a parent/person: "I’m also going back to work..."
- Daily routine – the sequence of activities in kindergarten (get it from the teacher if you don’t know) – increase certainty and ease concerns, including what happens after kindergarten, as well as the arrangements for transitions and transportation—who picks up whom, when, and how
Patience and good spirits...
Good luck to us all!
