A Short Passover Story – "Even the Trash Can Has Something to Say"

ree

Before Passover, the Levi family’s house entered emergency cleaning mode.

Dad was running around with a broom, Mom was battling the cabinets, and little Yael, holding a rag in her hand, looked more confused than obedient.

But it was actually the kitchen trash can, the one that took everything—from the crumbs the kids scattered to the remnants of hidden chametz found under the couch—that felt it was time to speak up.

“Listen to me!” came a sudden and peculiar cry. Everyone turned their heads.

“Is that... the trash can?” asked Dad, scratching his head.“Yes, it’s me!” the trash can answered proudly. “I’ve been here for years, collecting all your garbage, always tossed and forgotten—but this year, I’ve decided I have something to say too!”

Mom laughed and put her hands on her hips. “What could you possibly have to say, trash can?”

“Teamwork!” yelled the trash can. “Enough of everyone just tossing me half a pita and, in the end, only Dad ties up the bag! This whole house is a mess, and before Passover, it’s an all-out war! So here’s the plan: from now on, everyone pitches in.”

The kids were startled for a moment, but then Yael asked, “And when we’re done, will you be happy?”

“Not only will I be happy,” the trash can grinned, “but you’ll feel like this house is yours. Not just Mom’s.”

And so, everyone started working together. Tal with the broom, Yael pushing with a mop, and Mom and Dad laughing on the side about the trash can that organized the whole mess.

By the end of the day, when the entire house was sparkling clean, the trash can whispered quietly, “I’m the true hero. But don’t tell Elijah the Prophet…”

Message: Even a simple chore, like cleaning for Passover, can unite the family and feel like a shared mission. Belonging to the home begins when everyone contributes—even if it’s just tying up the trash bag.
